What Sawgrass Mills is

Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, in western Broward, opened in 1990 and is one of the largest malls in the United States, with roughly 2.4 million square feet and more than 400 outlets and discount stores. For a lot of South Florida couples it's a natural stop: big, nearby, and built around the idea of a lower price.

How outlet pricing works

An outlet price has two parts: the "compare at" or "was" price, and the discount from it. The discount is real arithmetic. The starting price is set by the retailer.

Some outlet pieces are past-season or overstock from full-price stores. Others are made specifically for outlets, sometimes with lighter metal or lower-grade stones, to hit a price. Neither is a scam. But a 50% discount off a price nobody paid isn't a 50% saving.

Hidden fees in engagement ring pricing and how to negotiate a ring price cover the rest of how retail markup works.

Five things to check on any outlet ring

1. The grading report. Which lab graded the center stone? Ask for a report from an independent lab, not an in-store grade, and check the report number online. GIA vs. IGI explains which labs grade strictly.

2. Natural or lab-grown. Both are sold at outlets. The tag and the receipt should say which, clearly.

3. Metal and weight. Is the band solid gold or plated? 10k, 14k or 18k? Thin bands and light prongs are a common way to cut cost.

4. Total carat weight vs. center stone. "1 carat total weight" can mean a small center stone plus many tiny side stones. The center stone is what she'll notice.

5. Returns and resizing. Outlet sales are often final or have shorter return windows. Ask before you buy.

How to compare an outlet quote

Take the outlet ring's details — center stone report, metal, karat, total weight — and ask two other sellers to quote the same thing. Comparing the same stone and the same metal across three sellers tells you more than any discount sign.

Frequently asked questions

Are engagement rings at outlet malls lower quality?

Not always. Some are full-price stock on clearance. Others are made for the outlet to a lower spec. Check the grading report and the metal.

Is the "compare at" price real?

It's the retailer's own reference price. Treat it as a claim, not a measure of the saving.

Can I negotiate at an outlet jeweler?

Sometimes, especially on higher-priced pieces. It's always worth asking about the final price including any setting, sizing and taxes.

Are outlet rings a good option for a tight budget?

They can be. A designer-direct ring with a lab-grown center is worth pricing alongside, since it often lands lower for the same stone.

What's the return policy at outlet jewelers?

It varies by store, and it's often stricter than at full-price stores. Get it in writing.

So where does this leave you?

Sawgrass Mills can save you money, but the saving is in the stone and metal you actually get, not in the sign. Compare what's in the ring, and the outlet becomes one honest quote among several.

The comparison we'd like you to make

Amana is designer-direct, based in Boca Raton, and we work with couples across Broward, including Coral Springs, Weston and Fort Lauderdale, in person or over video.

There's no "compare at" price with us, because there's nothing to discount from. You see what the stone, the design and the making cost, with the stone's independent grading report in hand. In one conversation, The Amana Method, we design the ring around her and your budget. About three days later you see a CAD of the exact ring, and nothing is made until you approve it.

Design and craftsmanship together typically run about $1,500 to $4,000 total, with larger or more complex center stones running higher. A comparable retail ring commonly lands near $12,000.
